HistoryLa Muraz seems to have its origins in it is name ”walls”, implying walls in ruins or remains of construction, rustic but walled houses, its former written form being Mura. Its history is not well known because it was dependant on the chapterhouse of the Maccabees of Geneva and the priory of Peillonnex that used to own fiefs there until 1791 and they left very few archives. Still, the settlement must be fairly old considering the remains discovered nearby. The village of La Croisette located at 1200m is the highest point of the commune where erratic boulders can be found; they were left behind more than 20.000 years ago by the glacier of the Arve. Some significant traces of metallurgical exploitation from the Iron Age (750-50 BC) have been found there; an old Gallic hill-fort, a fortified village at the time of the Allobroges, could have been located there. The church (link with the Church section) is dedicated to Saint-Martin, this indicates it is very old. In 1532 it was devastated by a fire; on the lintel of the bell-tower door (picture) are found engraved the coat of arms of the family Gerbaix de Sonnaz (property of a Gallo-Roman man named Solo) and the date is 1532. The present building of neo-gothic style dates back to 1885. Inside the wall of the choir on the right-hand side to the high altar is a built-in stone adorned with decorative motives in the shape of tracery and dates back to the Carolingian time. Two pages of the Mappe Sarde, the originals of which date back to 1730, are exhibited in the Council room in the townhall. |
