Presentation of the communeLa Muraz is located in the “département” of Haute-Savoie, also called “the roof of Europe”. The origin of its name would come from “murs” (walls), implying walls in ruins or remains of construction, rustic walled houses.
La Muraz is locally pronounced LA MURE. Its inhabitants, numbered 712 at the last census in 1999, are called the Muraziens, Mûriens or Murois; to those add the numerous holiday home owners who come during the summer and occupy up to a hundred dwellings, that is to say almost a third of the village houses whose touristic nature is therefore fully established.
Spread over 1432 hectares the village of La Muraz rises in terraces from 606 meters to 1309 meters in height. It is split by the Viaizon stream (from vas, a pre-indo-european word meaning source) which runs into a green wooded valley making two slopes positioned to the east and west.
La Muraz is therefore a country village but a village located less than 10 kilometers from the town of Annemasse, the second most important economic centre of attraction of the “département” of Haute-Savoie and a village located on the doorstep of Switzerland and very close to the international city of Geneva, the border being only 12 kilometers away.
La Muraz, with a well thought-out urbanisation policy led by the successive councillors, has kept the charms of the country and can therefore offer an appreciable quality of life in a preserved environment, a priceless wealth nowadays, especially when the city centres are only a few minutes away. |
